Mazarrón's Big Guns: The Gun Batteries of Castillito, Jorel and Altalayon at Cabo Tiñoso. These batteries were part of the shore defences for Cartagena which is the headquarters of the Spanish Mediterranean Fleet and a strategic naval location for nearly 500 years. In 1912 the government commissioned studies for new defences but not until 1925 was a plan put into effect for the deployment of the shore batteries, the guns at Castillitos being installed between 1932 and 1936. The battery itself has been beautifully built into the mountainside using local stone and in the style of a castle and is not on any tour brochure. There are no guides or tea houses, this how it was left.
